Geocache Description:

A cache near by Burrator reservoir. The coordinates are for the cache, not for the Indian in the title. The quickest route to this cache is by parking on the B3212 and walking downhill towards the leat. However, this cache is on a pleasant walking route either from cross gates or Norsworthy bridge, going through the woods and following the leat upstream.

The devonport leat was was built to carry water to the expanding naval town of Devonport. It originally covered a distance of 27 miles and was completed in 1802. Today the leat ends its journey close to Burrator Reservoir and still provides Plymouth with up to three million gallons of water a day.
It is thought a french prisoner of war involved in the construction, placed the original porcelain carving of the red indian chief into the mortar of the leat at this time. In the 1980s the carving became damaged and was removed. In 1996 a new replica was cemented in.
If you are having trouble finding the figure, firstly find the first stone bridge downstream from the metal bridge below Raddick Hill. Then count 70 granite blocks down stream (on your left as you face downstream). You should find the white face 9 inches from the top, in the mortar between two granite blocks.
