CITO Location: Kearny Marsh
CITO Date / Time: Sunday, June 5, 2011 @ 10AM - 12PM
This is the second Kearny Marsh CITO sponsored by NNJC. Last
years event,
GC28G7J, had a turn out of 13 geocachers who assisted in
cleaning up the marsh.
Kearny Marsh is the only fresh-water marsh in the Meadowlands,
severely degraded over the years because it is next to old Keegan
Dump, an orphaned landfill. The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission
(NJMC) has spent $30 million to remediate the landfill and prevent
it from polluting the marsh anymore.
The marsh is home to moorhens, herons, coots, grebes, bitterns,
and swallows. The views of the marsh and New York City skyline are
awesome.
As part of National Trail Day weekend, the NNJC will be
partnering with the NJMC and Bergen County Audubon Society (BCAS)
in sponsoring a two-hour cleanup at the Kearny Marsh. Trails will
be cleaned up by foot and the marsh by canoe. We will meet at the
northeast corner of the Gunnel Oval off Schuyler Avenue at 10AM.
NJMC will supply trashbags and water with participants advised to
bring their own weed clippers, work glove, and other supplies.
Canoes, paddles, and life vests will also be provided to assist
with cleaning up the marsh. You will have to sign a standard
liability release for this event.
Afterward, there are plenty of geocaching opportunities in
nearby Richard W. DeKorte Park (Lyndhurst), Hudson County Park at
Laurel Hill (Secaucus), and Losen Slote Creek Park (Little
Ferry).

while encouraging responsible stewardship of public lands.

New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC)
The New Jersey Meadowlands
Commission (NJMC) is the zoning and regulatory agency for the
30.4-square-mile Meadowlands District, composed of parts of 14
municipalities in Bergen and Hudson counties.
Created in 1969, the NJMC has fought
to end illegal dumping, encourage appropriate development, and
protect the remaining open space and wetlands. The NJMC has helped
preserve thousands of acres and helped create eight miles of trails
and 21 parks in the District, and also conducts bird walks, canoe
tours and popular pontoon boat cruises on the Hackensack River.
Bergen County Audubon Society (BCAS)
The BCAS is a chapter of the
National Audubon Society founded in 1941 whose mission is to
promote and protect wildlife in its natural habitat by providing
opportunities for observation and conservation.
