Geocache Description:

Bring a pen and paper to record the clues along the way.
You will need to visit the 3 caches to collect the clues to give the co ordinates for the By, By, By cache at N A2 O BE,CDF W W000 O AA,EG2

This multi cache set up by the Jackson family has options for all types of Geocachers. The road that it follows is usually quiet with little traffic therefore suitable for walking or cycling, for the enthusiastic ramblers this area is crisscrossed with footpaths and bridleways and for those less energetic it could be done by car. The return journey if you walk or cycle is approx. 4 miles, if you continue to visit the village of Ab Kettleby it about 5 miles. The caches are along a road with an average gradient of 2%.

The name Melton comes from the early English word Medeltone - meaning 'Middletown surrounded by small hamlets'. Mowbray is a Norman family name of early Lords of the Manor - namely Robert de Mowbray.
From 789 AD onwards, the Vikings from Denmark and Norway raided most parts of the British Isles. Asfordby, Ab Kettleby and Welby are Scandinavian place names, places with the ending "by" denote a farm then village. Oh by the way one does not have a village any more.
You can visit our other cache, Rosie’s Return at Asfordby Hill then the market town of Melton Mowbray and pick up the town centre micro cache and a Melton Mowbray pork pie.
Parking is on the grass verge at N 52 46,428 W000 55,964 where there is a sign on the gate showing a Permissive Path providing a safe circular route close to the village of Asfordby. The view from the top of the hill affords stunning views over the mixed farming landscapes.
For cachers with an industrial interest you can see Holwell Ironworks Iron Smelt Mill behind the fishing lake. This is sited on the other side of road towards Asfordby Valley and there are footpaths that cross the site. Originally operated by the Holwell Iron Company, it was constructed in 1878 with the first iron being tapped in 1881. The site later expanded to include a foundry.
Adjacent was the site of “Asfordby Super Pit”, a modern deep coal pit which was built between 1984 and 1993, but this closed in 1997 due to numerous geological difficulties and the low price of coal at the time, part of the site is now a business park.
