Start at the new 4S Ranch trail-head park at Alva Rd. and Hunters Ridge Rd. (the second time they intersect). Follow trail for one mile to Lake Hodges.
The trail is one mile long from the park to the edge of the water at Lake Hodges. It follows the path of a road built in the 1890's connecting the 4S Ranch area to Escondido. The road was abandoned about 1918 as Lake Hodges was completed and covered part of it water. You can see the lake from the trail after hiking about half of the way.
The trail takes you where the local wildlife live. When I'm out there I stay on the trail, keep a lookout for snakes and know that it's possible for cougars to visit the area as well. I'm no expert, so I'll leave it to you to read about how to be careful when hiking in San Diego.
Park to Lake elevation change is about 300 ft.
