Airthrey Castle Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Gray Man: Alas, this one has gone again - don't know if it keeps getting muggled, or if the cache simply falls away. As it's happened twice before, and as one of the clues is unavailable during the winter, I'll archive.

Geocache Description:

You can complete this multi-cache in 15 minutes - the co-ordinates are not for the cache itself, but for Airthrey Castle in the grounds of Stirling University.

Airthrey Castle was build at the end of the 19th Century for Robert Haldane, who commissioned the design by Robert Adam. Adam's design was influenced by his knowledge of classical Italian landscapes, as was the layout of the estate landscape completed by Thomas White in 1798.

During the Second World War the castle became a maternity hospital and was used as such until 1969, supplementing the needs of Stirling Royal Infirmary. Then in the 1960s the estate was selected as the site of the first completely new Scottish University since the University of Edinburgh was established in 1582. The University of Stirling opened in 1967. Its campus is located in 60 acres (240,000 m2) of woodland, 300 acres (1.2 km2) of mature landscaped parkland, a loch with an abundance of wildlife, and quite a few Geocaches! The University campus now incorporates Airthrey Castle, where the School of Law is based. Airthrey Castle retains many original features, as well as housing the University's Moot Courtroom.
