This is a series of caches around the picturesque village of Merthyr Mawr, one of Chas the Dog's favourite walks. The cache is alongside a country lane with parking nearby, although cacher vehicles will need to park in field gateways so please don't obstruct for any longer than necessary and park considerately. Horses form as much of the traffic as road vehicles so please don't scare them!
Riverside paths, woodlands and ancient stones are featured in this fascinating walk through the scenic beauty and history of the Merthyr Mawr area. Merthyr Mawr village is an outstanding collection of thatched cottages surrounded by meadows and woodlands. Stepping stones take you across the river to Ogmore Castle built by the Normans.
The name Merthyr Mawr has connections with St. Myfor and probably means 'The place where St. Myfor was martyred' The church dates back to the 19th century but was built on an ancient site dating back to the 5th century and there are many stones depicting this. The cache series links into a number of neighbouring cache locations and the series will hopefully be extended over time.
The GZ is facing the north wall of the Merthyr Mawr estate. The house of Merthyr Mawr was constructed between 1806 and 1809 on a new site by Sir John Nicholl in a classical style.
The cache is a 2.6 litre klip-lok box inside a camouflage bag. It contains a log book and pen along with additional goodies. This is almost a cache and dash as it's only a few steps from the road but it can get muddy in wet weather, so be prepared.
The cache container holds a silica gel sachet - please leave it in the box so the contents remain dry!
