Geocache Description:

The most memorable historical event around the Rolley site is the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. Bastogne was surrounded by German troops and defended by regiments of the well-known "US Airborne Division 101". Regiment 502 had taken the castle as headquarters, while the farm of the castle was converted into a field hospital. The horse stables served as barracks for the American soldiers. Many wounded American and German soldiers have been operated and cared for in the field hospital.

Major General M. Taylor, commander of Airborne Division 101 spent the night at the castle on December 28, 1944, and Brig. General A. McAuliffe was decorated there by General G. Patton on January 30, 1945.
