Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the above location, which is a large car park adjacent to the recreation ground. However the cache can be located at N 53° 40.ABC; W 001 53.XYZ

In order to find the missing co-ordinates you will need to complete the SAS series, a walk of just over 3 miles, where you will find the missing numbers in some of the 10 caches.

Stainland means Stony ground in the Old Norse language and the village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Stanland. The village is about 800 feet above sea level.

In the centre of the village, opposite St.Andrews Church is the Stainland Cross.
The column of The Cross is unusually circular and plain and there is no history about its purpose or construction. The Church was built around 1755.

During your circular walk around the village you will pass the impressive Carr Hill Castle, built in the mid nineteenth century by local mill owners. You will also cross the road at Holywell Green, location of the ancient St.Helen’s Well, which sadly can no longer be seen.
