The Granville Cemetery sits in an area of rolling hillocks at the north-west edge of the village. The agricultural fields on three sides give cemetery visitors a sense of privacy, a feeling of being alone away from the village. Granville was first settled in 1836, and those settlers used a small area near the present cemetery for their burials. A group of citizens organized the Granville Cemetery Association in 1863 as a private association. The first parcel of Cemetery Association land was acquired in 1864, and many graves from the initial site were moved to the “new” grounds. Bits and pieces of land were added over the years, the most recent acquisition in 1991. On two occasions, 1942 and 1991, acreage was sold to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church of Granville for its own cemetery. This adjacent area lies at the far north end of the Cemetery, and both Associations traverse the same ingress and egress roads. Because the Granville Cemetery is old, it holds graves of veterans from all wars back to the Civil War. One area is designated for soldier burials, but many veterans’ graves are scattered throughout the entire cemetery. We have gotten permission from the Granville Cemetery Association Board to place this cache in their cemetery. As this is classified as a cemetery cache please note it is NOT hidden on any grave marker or site. If there is a service going on, or folks are visiting their loved ones when you arrive please be respectful and come back at a later time. Your understanding and compassion for those folks will be appreciated. PLEASE FOLLOW ANY POSTED VISITING HOURS, RESPECT THE RESIDENTS HERE AND PLEASE ONLY VISIT DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS
