Peninsula Drive – The Start

Peninsula Drive

This is a series of caches designed to take you a drive around the Ards peninsula and take in some of the amazing views that can be had on a clear day. I would advise taking your time to do this series and if the weather is good perhaps bring a picnic and take in the amazing scenery. All the caches in the series vary in size and shape and some are tougher than others. While a few of the caches are wheelchair accessable others are not. This may be a good series to take kids on but please note some of the caches are placed near very busy roads so if you do bring pets or kids then please take extra care at these locations. As well as this series there are quite a few other caches around the peninsula so please plan before you go as there are some very good caches along the way. There will be a total of 21 caches in this series.

The Start

This cache which is located at the floodgates in Newtownards is the recommended starting point for this series. From here the series will take you down the Strangford Lough side of the peninsula and round the southern tip of the peninsula and then back up the Belfast Lough side of the peninsula.

The Floodgates

The Floodgates in Newtownards are located right at the head of Strangford Lough and are popular with walker who would walk along the floodgates. While here if you take the walk there are several WW2 shelters dotted around the country side and the floodgates are even built on top of one so watch out for that along the way. From the walk along the floodgates there is also a great view of Ards Airport were if you like you could take the time to watch the aircraft take off and land, on a nice day there is a lot of traffic at the airport. The Cache
The cache itself is a standard medium sized tab loc box with the usual child friendly swaps, logbook and pen. There is a small carpark right next to GZ but on nice days this can become quite busy. Please take extra care when retrieving and replacing the cache as this can be a very muggle heavy area so please use all your stealth skill. At GZ there is a nice lookout point to view the lough and also Scrabo tower.
