Cache lies near the footpath along Whanganui River flood bank walkway behind the meat works. Ground is rough with hidden holes and rubble, logs and long grass. Wear sturdy footwear and watch your step. It is above the muddy river flats and waters edge.
In the early years of the history of Wanganui, the Whanganui River had many wharves which were used to ship cargo, produce and meat. With the decline of using the river to export goods, the wharves fell into disuse. The skeletons of many of these can be seen along both banks of the river and some have been restored to their former glory such as the Hatrick wharf. The new walkway which has been built as part of the flood protection of low lying areas of Balgownie is a great way of seeing some of the old wharves. One is able to see what is left of the Imlay Wharf. This was once a bustling landing for lighters which carried meat out to larger ships. The butchers use to send lamb to the UK from this wharf. Many birds use the estuary and it is worth taking along binoculars if you want to identify the bird life. The walkway along the river now extends from the city to the Wanganui Cold Store (about 7 km) and can be walked or cycled along with great views of the river. At times the path goes back onto the road where homes are on the river. ( Bedford Avenue and Balgownie Avenue) For a longer walk cars can be parked behind the Chronicle Building or on Taupo Quay just before it joins Heads Road. A second car can be parked at the Wanganui sailing club if you do not want to retrace your steps. The site can be accessed either direction.
