Geocache Description:

The Cache is in the church in village of Upokongaro on State Highway 4 on the way to Raetihi

St Mary’s Church Upokongaro near Wanganui on State Highway 4 about 15 km North of Wanganui.
A prominent settler Captain A. Montgomerie had a leading roll in its establishment. The architect was Edward Morgan and the contract price was 218 pounds.
It was opened on 11th November 1877 by Rev T.L.Taylor.
An unusual feature is the steeple which is triangular and set on a square base. This gives the effect from some angles of being out of plumb, however this is only an illusion.
St Mary’s is the oldest church on its original site in the Wanganui District and it is still used for worship within the Parish of Wanganui East.
The stained glass windows installed in the 1870’s and 1890’s are of particular beauty. The church has an Historic Places Trust Classification.
The container is a small sistema click it container with a log book and small items to exchange.
There is a car, ladybird pegs, S American coins and two small dinosaurs. Please bring your own pen.
