Geocache Description:

John Passmore Edwards – 1823 – 1911
This series of caches has been sited to celebrate the centenary of the death of this great Cornish philanthropist on 22nd April 2011, at the request of friend Dean Evans who has done so much to keep the memory of this great Cornishman alive.

Easy nano cache though stealth required!

John Passmore Edwards was born in Blackwater, Cornwall, in 1823 and from this humble home in the little Cornish village he became a City journalist, MP for Salisbury, Editor of a leading London newspaper, life-long champion of the working classes and is remembered as being a Benefactor Extraordinary ( R S Best 1981).
Edwards was also a champion of parliamentary reform, supporter of the Chartist and Temperance movements and involved in campaigns against slavery; he was a notable opponent of Boer War.
In just 14 years over 70 major buildings were established as a direct result of bequests from John Passmore Edwards as well as many other gifts and donations to further their good work. Hospitals, Libraries, Schools, Convalescent Homes and Art galleries were provided, many of which continue to serve the community to which they were given.

Falmouth's first recorded hospital overlooked Swanpool Beach, somewhere near the end of what is now Boscawen Road, and probably served infectious cases from visiting ships. Later, a small private hospital was provided but the first public Hospital, which incorporated the dispensary was built in 1893 at the top of Killigrew Road.

This building is now used as the Age Concern Day Centre, enjoyed by many elderly residents of Falmouth.
