Geocache Description:

This historic church is on Number 2 line and accessed by travelling up Durie Hill and on the road towards Fordell.

The first St John’s church Matarawa was built in 1865 and opened in April 1866. The preacher at the time was Richard Taylor. The last service was held in 1908 when the unweathered timber caused the church to be pulled down. The present church was completed in the same year and has been used by the communities of Fordell, Matarawa and Okoia ever since.
This pretty little church is out in the countryside and has well kept gardens and many graves. It is a pleasant drive and takes about 10 minutes to drive there from the top of Durie Hill.
The church grounds are well kept and worth a wander around but please treat the graves with respect and remember to shut the gate when you leave.
The geocache is in the gardens of the church and not on any graves or surrounds.
The Cache is a camo film container with no room for swaps. Bring your own pencil . Please see that cache is well hidden when you replace it in its hiding place.
This historic church is one of three that you can visit in the Wanganui area. The others are
St Peter the Fisherman in Gonville and St Mary’s in Upokongaro.
