The origin of Katsue-zaka
This hill has been handed down that the two stories.
1. Rice planting began on the east side, and arrive at this hill on evening and break down from hungry.
2. In the great famine year, hungry peoples is arrive at this hill, many people die from hungry. A small shrine was built for comfort the spirits of those people.

飢坂の由来
この飢坂には次のような形の違った２つの話が伝えられている。
１．大昔、土与丸（西条町）に牛万匹という長者がいた。西条１万６千石の収穫物は全部自分のものであった。長者の田植えはにぎやかで一番東の端「歌謡坂」のところから歌をうたいながら始まり、浜田（西条警察署のあたり）で中食を食べ、さらに植えていき夕方この峠に辿り着くが、腹が減って倒れそうになるので飢坂というようになった。
２．大飢饉の年であった。飢えに苦しむ人々が食べ物を求めて、街道筋は行列をなしていた。ここでは村人たちが焚き出しを行っていたが、この峠に達するや力つきて、倒れ死ぬ人も多く出た。それから飢坂と呼ぶようになった。
