Geocache Description:

DUN BEAG BROCH
One of short series of cache placed around historic sites on the Isle of Skye.
There is a free car park on the main road, directly below the site.

The ruins of Dun Beag broch are all that remain of a once magnificent structure, underpinned by an ingenuity of design that is both fascinating and skillful. Brochs in Scotland tend to date from between 2300 and 1900 years BP, and this at Dun Beag, overlooking Loch Bracadale, was excavated between 1914 and 1920 by Countess Vincent Baillet de Latour, 2nd wife of the 25th Chief of the clan Macleod, who unearthed some artefacts from the Iron age, the Viking period and from the times of Henry II, Edward I, James VI, George II and George II. The remains of a more modern croft dwelling nearby testify to the occupation of this area over at least two millennia.

This is the most accessible of Skye's brochs, and much of the double wall construction can still be seen, in places up to a height of about 16 feet. Between the outer and inner walls are the remains of a flight of stairs.

The siting of Dun Beag broch, high on a rocky hillock above cultivated land and the windswept countryside, may well have been a conscious statement of status. The broch is in the care of Historic Scotland, but freely open to everyone.

The cache is not located in the broch, but a short distance away.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU ARE NOT BEING OBSERVED FROM THE BROCH WHEN RETRIEVING THE CACHE.

Please leave this wonderful location as you find it.
