Geocache Description:

**Only attempt Stage 1 during daylight hours**
Stage 1 will bring you to the Hess Family Burial Ground, c1804, which is one of Hamilton's lost burial grounds. It is widely unknown, except to the people whose backyards border onto it. Stage 2 will take you in the vicinity of the Cross Of Lorraine. Cache is a bison tube. Please bring your own writing instrument.

Parking and cemetery access information is contained below as is information as to how to find out the coordinates for the final.

To access Stage 1, please park in the parking lot for the Church of the Resurrection. This can be accessed via Sunshine Court. From parking, the burial ground can be accessed by a small lane. The coordinates will take you to the only remaining grave marker in this burial ground, which is of Jane Snider. When going towards this stone, please walk alongside the chain link fence, and put your GPS away as you will not need it. Please do the math needed for Stage 2 when back in your car. Be respectful.

You will need the following information from this stone: Jane's year of birth, and Jane's year of death. Please add these two years together, divide by 1000. Add this number (x.xxx) to both of these coordinates to get the final coordinates: 43 10.224, 79 50.436.

Here is some additional information about the Hess Family Burial Ground, and the Cross of Lorraine.

Michael Hess, the father of Peter Hess (whom Hess St. is named after), is buried here. Michael Hess was an early settler to Barton Township, now Hamilton Mountain. He died and was buried here in 1804. Although it was named Hess Cemetery, the only other Hess family members buried here are Michael's wife Gertrude Charity and Jacob Hess.

Peter Hess moved his family to the new town of Hamilton and became a prominent early citizen.

There is no sign marking this cemetery. It is surrounded by backyards and accessed by a small lane linking it to the southern lawn behind the Church of the Resurrection on Mohawk Rd.

This burial ground has only one tombstone still standing. Jane Snider's tombstone remains hidden between trees and bushes near the plot's north eastern corner. It is said that three remaining stones exist within the church.
