Geocache Description:

Another fun cache in Indian Mounds Park.

NOTE: The "Great Wind Storm of 2011" downed many trees throughout Quincy's Park system. There is a large tree down near GZ with branches across the access to the cache. So, I am raising the terrain one star. If the Park District clears the area I will lower it again. The building to the south of GZ was erected in 1962 as a museum for Native American artifacts and was actually constructed over a burial ground with exposed grave sites. I remember visiting this museum and how interesting it was. I seem to recall there was some discontent with certain Native American Tribes which forced this site to close. In 1969 the museum moved (leaving the grave sites) to Quinsippi Island, an island in the Mississippi River to a building erected with the help of the Moorman Manufacturing Company, and the Quincy Park District. The move sparked new interest in the museum and gifts and donations increased for the collections. In 1977 the Smithsonian Museum took a special interest in the museum and helped to expand and redesign the exhibits for the museum's nationally important collection of Native American artifacts and their natural history collections. The museum’s new home located at 16th and Maine Streets, is in a house built by Richard F. Newcomb in 1880. Visiting Hours Tuesday - Sunday: 1 pm - 5 pm The Quincy Museum is closed from November & January through March
