Geocache Description:

Series of caches highlighting the different paths that US Route 50 has taken over the years

US Route 50 runs from Ocean City, MD to Sacramento, CA, over 3000 miles. This series focuses on the portion between Parkersburg and Clarksburg, WV. Locally known as Route 50, George Washington Highway, Northwest Turnpike, Cooridor D- this section is now entirely four-lane highway. There are still several segments of older highway that can be seen and travelled. In some areas, more than one older alignment may be found.

Salem was one of many towns that was bypassed by the "new" highway. This cache is located on the west edge of town. The large buildings on the hill to the southwest belong to the West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth. While it might sound sort of "campish", this is a correctional facility. At one time it was just girls who were housed here. The park area was actually used to grow some of the food that they would feed the residents.

Cache is a larger micro, hidden just a few feet from the parking area. Easy parking. Cache contains log only. Potentially a high muggle area, so please exercise stealth.
