Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE LISTED CO-ORDINATES.

Ewen Maddock was an early pioneer of Mooloolah. His father, Thomas was born in Cornwall in 1843 and came to Brisbane with his parents in 1848. In 1867, he married Barbara Dowall and 11 years later, they moved with their young family of 3 sons and a daughter, to Mooloolah. Thomas built a slab and shingle house for his family on a site near the present day Mooloolah Valley Country Club. The couple would eventually have 8 children, of which Ewen was the third oldest.

Ewen attended the newly opened Mooloolah Plains Provisional School in 1879. After a few years of schooling, he left to work for his father as a timber getter and became a skilled axeman. The pair continued to work together on various jobs including construction of the North Coast Railway Line. In 1893, 3 weeks of constant rain caused flooding which inundated the house. Later in 1897, Ewen selected a site on a nearby ridge and with the help of their neighbour, built a small cottage called "Koongamoon".

At age 49, Ewen married a school teacher named Harriett Poole. He acquired his own bullock team and also worked as a benchman at the sawmill. The couple tried their hand at poultry and dairy farming which they worked at until shortly before Harriett's death in 1952. Ewen Maddock died on the 5th of April 1973, aged 100 years. He was buried in Mooloolah Cemetery alongside other family members

The cottage was desecrated by vandals in 1976 and was eventually demolished, however the bunya pines that Ewen planted in 1900 still stand today and serve as reminders of the Maddock Era. As a mark of respect, a replica of the cottage was built at the Ewen Maddock Dam Recreation Centre on the dam's south-eastern shore

To find this cache, you must first visit five others that are hidden around the dam. They each contain a clue that you will need to note down and solve if you wish to find this final one. They are.....

GC2VW44 -Addlington On Ewen
GC2VWEQ -Blackbutts On Ewen
GC2VW4V -Paperbarks On Ewen
GC2VWFH -Banksias On Ewen
GC2VWGN -Koongamoon On Ewen

When you have all 5 clues, go to the Coach House at Maddock Park to work out the final co-ordinates.

Parking for this one can be a bit tricky. There are several spots along Steve Irwin Way to pull over and attack this cache from.... you just need to be a bit cautious as it's a 100km zone. The safest place to park would be the big carpark that is opposite the Big Kart Track and follow the road easement north along Steve Irwin Way until you find a forestry track in, or the intersection of Old Caloundra Road & Steve Irwin Way.

The final Co-ordinates are….

S 26º A.BCC
E 152º D.EEE
