Geocache Description:


With the new enthusiasm in Olivia, we figured that we may need to gear up, so what better place to go than to an electronics store. So, after dinner last night, Olivia and I got into our car and headed out to the nearest store, and it was a “two-fer” seeing how a cache had just got published not too long ago near one (GC2VK5X). Not knowing what this one had, I was hoping for the one-stop-shop of night vision, encrypted radios, etc., but it turned out that this was not the store for our immediate needs. As we were leaving we noticed that it had grown dark. There were very few cars left in the lot, and once again, it was eerily quiet. At least the parking lot was well lit, and Olivia skipped to our car ahead of me. I began searching the Geocaching App on my iPhone to aid me in locating the cache, and once located, it appeared to be only several parking spots away from where Olivia and I had parked our car. Luckily it was in a well lit area, until we go approximately 20 feet away. For no reason that I could tell, the light began flickering, and with a sound equivalent to a mosquito hitting a bug zapper, the light burnt out.

Knowing it was a one star hide, it was not hard to find, even in the dark. We noticed that we were the second to find (of course dyknomight was the first to find, but then again, when isn’t he?) and as we were signing the log, we heard what seemed to be arguing coming from the other side of the fence. With it being dark, I could not really see, so we put the cache back and got to our vehicle and turned on the headlights, only to notice that there was a huge cemetery less than 50 feet from where we were parked.

My headlights shone over the tombstones, and I was able to see what appeared to be two men fighting. I could only make out silhouettes, but one of the men was quite larger, and much faster than the other man. All of a sudden I heard a loud scream and I see the smaller man latching on the larger man’s right arm. I couldn’t see exactly what was happening, but then larger man was able to push the other away and he threw a right hook, hit the skinner man in the face, and the smaller man went straight down to the ground.

The larger man turned to us, noticing that he was being illuminated by our headlights, and began running towards us. I have to admit that I panicked a bit. I threw Olivia in the back of the car and fumbled with my keys. Just as I was closing the driver side door, he was already up to our vehicle, and he was able to stop my door from closing. Fearing the worst, I looked at the man in order to figure out how I was going to get out of this zombie attack, only to see that he was not a zombie.

He was 6’3”, probably about 300 pounds, and though he was on the “chunky” side, you could tell that this was a force not to be reckoned with. With beads of sweat dripping off his bald head, and oversized glasses, like Elvis Costello wears, slipping down his nose, he did appear to be more harmless that I originally thought. But if he wanted anything from me, he would have just taken it, and there would not be anything I could have done. He was wearing a black t-shirt which read, “Treadmills Get You Nowhere!” which, if I were in any other frame of mind, I would have laughed. With his black Dickies pants, Chuck Taylor high tops, and the chain wallet, I could tell that he had to be on the “side of the living,” rather than the other side. He asked in a soft panting voice, “What did you see?” I answered the same as anyone else would…”See? I didn’t see anything. I can’t see. No see. Nope. Not a thing. I was just …..” again I thought of telling someone about the fun sport of Geocaching, but again, not really the time or place.

“I saw you last week. You were with your little girl. You met Bernard.”

I began to explain that I never found out the old man’s name, and that I was apparently at another loss, because I did not know his name. He told me his name was Michael. “Well, umm, hello Michael. This is Olivia, and I am….”

“Look. If you are going to stick around, you are either going to be a spectator or a meal. If you want to be a spectator, I suggest you go over there.” Michael pointed to the roof top parking lot of the near-by Home Depot. Michael closed my door, I heeded his warning and started the car and began to back up. As I did, he knocked on my window and motioned me to roll it down.

As I did, I asked, “Yeah?”

“Hey. I don’t have a light. Can you look at this and tell me if it is bad?”



As I looked at it, I realized that I did not have the heart to tell him. Another “Rockford,” and we were out of there, and parked here, where the cache is placed.
