A nano cache located at the start of a boardwalk in the cwm Coed y Cerrig nature reserve. It is not necessary to leave the boardwalk to find the cache. Parking is available directly opposite the start of the boardwalk.
The cwm Coed y Cerrig area where this cache is located is a nature reserve managed by the Countryside Council for Wales. It is a carefully managed habitat of coppiced alder that was part of the thriving charcoal industry in the past. It was this industry that gave Fforest Coal Pit it's name, not an actual coal pit which is often assumed. The habitat created by the coppicing and management of the alder allows a wide variety of plants to grow here including some rare species.
In 1919 during the construction of the Grwyne Fawr dam at the head of the nearby valley a railway was constructed that passed through the cwm. The sleepers for this were cut from the wood in the area. Prior to this the main access to the land and farms in the area and Grwyne Fawn valley was from tracks over the mountains rather than the valley bottom. Once the dam was completed the railway was dismantled and the road was put though in its place in 1929.
There are several paths around the cwm that offer some lovely little walks definitely worth a bit of time to explore. While the boardwalk offers an easy access way to explore the area, some of the paths on the other side of the road are more strenuous. There is an information board and leaflets available at the parking area and along the boardwalk.
