SLSSA remains the key agency for beach safety and a vital community service playing a fundamental role in building healthy communities in addressing community issues and government policies such as obesity, physical activity, youth development, safer communities, training and education, and family.
A surf lifesaving club is the heart of any beach, providing better health outcomes for South Australians of all ages. It is a meeting place, a training college, a fitness and recreation centre, an emergency evacuation centre, conference room, social and wedding function centre that encourages physical activity and teaches important Australian values - volunteerism, family, leadership, teamwork, meeting challenges, and pursuing excellence.

Today, the Association comprises Surf Life Saving South Australia Inc. (SLSSA) which primarily governs and co-ordinates surf lifesaving in SA, and surf lifesaving clubs strategically located around the SA coastline. From Whyalla to Port Elliot, over 5,500 members aged seven years to over 70 contribute to a volunteer emergency service of the highest standard.

The Grange Surf Life Saving club is situated on the Esplanade at Grange (between Jetty Street & Terminus Street) overlooking the picturesque Grange Beach. The top room which is located on the first level of the clubhouse, has sweeping views of the beach and ocean from North to South as far as the eye can see providing a wonderful venue for birthdays, engagements, and weddings receptions. Special functions are also welcome including Christmas dinners, Presentation nights, Club and Work functions.

The Club was established soon after a double drowning tragedy which occurred off the end of the Grange Jetty. On September 7th 1954, a young girl Gaynor Farrell, aged 5 years slipped from the ramp into the sea. A youth, Daryl Pinnock aged 11 years, saw the mishap while fishing. He slipped off his clothes and went to the girl's aid. Both children struggled in the seas. A rescue attempt of both children followed, without success. As a result of this double tragedy a public meeting was held to establish a surf life saving club.

The first group of women commenced training for their bronze medallion award in 1957. This led to the Surf Life Saving Association threatening the Club with expulsion if training did not stop. Eventually the squad was ruled ineligible, presumably because of gender, and training was abandoned
The Club's first bronze awards were issued in January 1956.
