Geocache Description:

Naravni biser v blizini Lenarta. / A natural pearl near Lenart.

JEZERO KOMARNIK

Raznovrstnost vodnih in mocvirskih bivalisc pogojuje zelo bogato favno vodnih nevretencarjev, kacjih pastirjev in dvozivk.

KOMARNIK (MOSQUITO LAKE)

Komarnik reservoir is situated about two kilometers west of Lenart, south of the main road Pernica-Lenart. First mentioned in the 16th century when the owners of the nearby castle Hrastovec used it for fish farming. In the sixties of the last century it was converted into the reservoir for the floodwater and is surrounded on the west side of the flood embankment. It comprises 26 acres, the average depth in the middle of it is around one and a half meter. On the east side surrounded by the woods Crni les (Black wood), on the southern and eastern side of the meadows and intensively cultivated fields. To regulate the river poets and destructive land reclamation in Pesnica Valley Mosquito Lake have become the last resort and an important residence for many endangered plant and animal species. The lake is characterized by high species diversity of aquatic plants, from 19 species, 11 of them are on the Red list of ferns and seed-bearing Slovenia, referred to as vulnerable or endangered species, such as. European white waterlily (Nymphea alba), Water chestnut (Trapa natans), Fringed water-lily (Nymphoides peltata) and many other endangered plants today.

The diversity of aquatic and wetland habitats makes a very rich fauna of aquatic invertebrates, dragonflies and amphibians. Here live many species of aquatic and marsh beetles, for example Water beetle (Graphoderus bilineatus) and Great diving beetle (Dytiscus marginalis), the lake is the only site of some species of water beetles in Slovenia. Dragonfly fauna as many as 35 species, and with the number of endangered species to mention Small Emerald Damselfly (Lestes virens) and Hairy Dragonfly (Brachytron pratense), especially the largest population of Eurasian Baskettail (Epitheca bimaculata), which has already disappeared in many places elsewhere in Europe. Here is also home to highly endangered European medicinal leech (Hirudo medicinalis).

During the nesting and migration Komarnik is an important nesting site and staging point of migratory birds. In spring and summer you can observe Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) and Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchus), Tufted Duck (Aythya fukigula) and Pochard (Aythya ferina) breed here and on migration you can observe many other species of ducks, waders and rails. Reeds is a nesting habitat of Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris) and Sedge Warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus). On lake nests Mute Swan (Cygnus olor). In the woods on the east side of the lake, among other species breed among other birds Grey-headed Woodpecker (Picus canus) and Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) . During migration you can observe many other bird species on the surrounding meadows and fields.

On the streams and ponds in the vicinity of Komarnik you can spot European Otter (Lutra lutra), common species is also Muskrat (Ondarta zibethica). It is recommended to visit from March to July and again in autumn, from September to November. Especially in the summer humming swarms can justify the name of the pond.
