An early (1871) Western American tollbooth
As one of the earliest settlers of Timpas, CO, Basil (Uncle Bill) Metcalf established Metcalf's Ranche in 1869. A “ranche” in the mid-nineteenth century had connotations which meant a stage station or the providing of other services to travelers. Between 1871 and 1873, Metcalf constructed a toll road between the northern “Mountain” (Colorado) branch of the Santa Fe Trail and the southern “Dry Cimarron” branch through Tollgate (Emery) Gap between Branson, CO and Folsom, NM. This road remained an important commercial route until the Colorado and Southern Railway came through in the 1880s. Caution - photos = spoilers.
