Bondi Beach gets it's name from the Aboriginal word for "breaking
The beach was once the private property of William Roberts. It was
purchased from him by Edward Smith Hall for his daughter Georgina
who was married to Francis O'Brien.
Locals will recognise most of those names as street names around
Bondi & Rose Bay.
Francis O'Brien opened the beach to the public in 1855 as a picnic

Bondi as a place of "peculiar loneliness"
