This stone circle was commissioned by the Barrow Town Counsel to compete with landmarks like the Castlerigg, Swinside, Bardsea Stone circles and it was also hoped that it would attract some of the tourism away from Stonehenge.
The stone was bought using money from European funding, unfortunately the money ran out before the monoliths could be erected and that’s why the stones are laying in a horizontal elevation. Work was scheduled to be completed by May 2010 ready to be opened by William Roache (of Coronation Street fame) who is a practicing Druid. It was hoped that all work would have been completed before the 21st June 2010 for the sunrise at 4:45 am on the summer solstice where William would have conducted the opening service.
The major flaw in the scam was the stones had been laid on the slag bank which is just over 150 years old and would have created a major question mark over the four thousand years old claim.
Surprisingly these facts are unknown to the population of Barrow and is mainly down to the fact that I’ve just made them up. But why else would these stones be laid out in a circle? Unless it’s some kind of stone alien crop circle????????? Suppose I should leave it at the first theory.
