Local points of interest

South Lakes Wildlife Park 047° 4.2 miles

This wildlife park is located near to Dalton-in-Furness and is well worth a visit. It has a large number of animals which wander free around the grounds. Luckily the tigers are behind bars.

Furness Abbey 077° 1.9 miles

This Abbey was founded in the 1100’s and is located in the Valley of the Deadly Nightshade between Barrow and Dalton. The Abbey was dedicated to St. Mary. This abbey was the second most powerful abbey in England and is one of the best preserved abbeys. A large part of the stonework has been robbed over the years for local building projects.

Barrow Park 123° 1 mile

Barrow Park is about 45 acres in size and has had some refurbishment in recent years. It’s great place to visit and to stroll around. There is a small lake in the park and if you take some bread there are plenty of birds to feed (just watch your fingers). The park can be identified by the large white cenotaph located on top of the hill to the North of the park.

Roosecote Power Station 127° 2.6 miles

Roosecote power station was originally a coal powered power station but has been converted to gas probably due to the availability of offshore local gas. You might think this is a strange point of interest but it is located near a walk known locally as the old line. The old railway line ran from Barrow to Roa Island and is an ideal place for bike riding or walking. Roa Island is at the end of a causeway where a small ferry is run to the Isle of Piel. The sands in this area are an SSSI nature reserve (Site of Special Scientific Interest). A lot of work has been done to improve the footpaths in this area. There’s is a pub called the Concle Inn located at Rampside which is to the South end of the Westfield Nature reserve.

Barrow Town Hall 154° 1.1 miles

The building of Barrow Town Hall started in 1882 but wasn’t finished and occupied until 1886 due to financial problems and the use of poor quality stone. Some of the older residence of Barrow will probably remember the long term staging on the Town Hall throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s.

St. James Church 147° 0.6 miles

St James church was founded in 1867 and consecrated in 1869 and was badly damaged in an air raid in 1941. The town of Barrow was expanding at a great rate and it was thought Barrow would become a city and St. James was earmarked to become a cathedral. Queen Victoria visited the town of Barrow and gave the organ which was located in Royal St. James Palace to the town which was installed into St. James Church in 1868.

St. Mary’s Church 156° 0.8 miles

St Marys Roman Catholic Church was opened for worship 28 Aug. 1867.
