Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches placed along the Little Miami Scenic Trail (LMST).

There are so many interesting species of trees along the Little Miami Scenic Trail, and this cache is dedicated to (and placed next to) one of those, Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana).

Eastern Redcedar is one of the few coniferous (evergreen) trees native to Ohio. Despite its name, the Eastern Redcedar is not a cedar but a type of juniper (hence the genus of its scientific name). The needles on this tree are short and needle-like, the cones are small, ovoid, and grayish-blue, and its bark is light brown and shreds easily. While the Eastern Redcedar can adapt to most soils, it prefers well-drained, calcareous (alkaline) soils such as are found along the Little Miami River.

As you travel along the rest of the Little Miami Scenic Trail, watch for these unique trees. You should have no trouble finding them!
