This is one of a series of caches placed along the Little Miami Scenic Trail (LMST).
There are so many interesting species of trees along the Little Miami Scenic Trail, and this cache is dedicated to (and placed next to) one of those, Boxelder (Acer negundo).
Boxelder is an interesting member of the maple family of trees. It is the only maple native to Ohio that has composite leaves. Boxelder leaves are sometimes confused with poison ivy leaves as both are composites made up of three leaflets (although boxelder leaves sometimes have five or more leaflets). Like other maples, boxelder produces "helicopter" seeds (technically called samaras) that spin as they drop through the air. Boxelder is often found in rural bottomlands such as those found along the Little Miami Bike Trail.
Boxelder Leaf, Seeds, and Bark
As you travel along the rest of the Little Miami Scenic Trail, watch for these unique trees. You should have no trouble finding them!
Note: please be sure to leave the letterbox stamp in the cache.
