This cache is one of the puzzle caches that make up the ALOHA from O'ahu (AFO) series. This series of caches, designed to take you on a tour of O'ahu, was created by GeoGerms in 2011-12 and adopted by Cache_Lee in 2021.

ALOHA from O'ahu

---Nu'uanu Pali---

Nu'uanu Pali is a section of the windward cliffs (pali in Hawaiian) of the Ko'olau mountain range. Located at the head of Nu'uanu Valley on the island of O'ahu, panoramic views of the windward side of O'ahu can be seen here. The Pali Highway (Hawai'i State Highway 61) connects Kailua and Kane'ohe with downtown Honolulu via the Nu'uanu Pali Tunnels bored through the cliffside. The Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout situated above the tunnels where visitors are treated to a panoramic view of O'ahu's windward side with sweeping views of Kane'ohe and Kailua. It is also well-known for the strong trade winds that blow through the natural wind tunnel formed at the pass.

The Nu'uanu Pali has been a vital pass from ancient times to the present because it is a low, traversable section of the Ko'olau mountain range that connects the leeward side of the mountains, Honolulu, to the windward side, Kailua and Kane'ohe. The route drew settlers who formed villages in the area and populated Nu'uanu Valley for a thousand years.

The Battle of Nu'uanu, one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history, took place here. In 1795 Kamehameha I sailed from his home island of Hawai'i with an army of 10,000 warriors and a few non-Hawaiian foreigners. After conquering the islands of Maui and Moloka'i, he came to O'ahu. The pivotal battle for the island occurred in Nu'uanu Valley, where Kamehameha’s army fought and drove the Oahu warriors, led by Kalanikupule, to the Nu'uanu Pali cliff where they were trapped. Hundreds of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge to their deaths 1,000 feet below. In this decisive battle, Kamehameha I conquered the island of O'ahu, bringing it under his rule.

In 1845 the first road was built across the Nu'uanu Pali to connect Windward O'ahu with Honolulu. In 1898, during construction work, eight hundred skulls were found and believed to be the remains of the warriors who fell to their deaths from the cliff above. The Pali Highway and the Nu'uanu Pali Tunnels replaced the old road in 1959 and are currently in use.

The cache is located in the Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside which is open 6am to 6pm.

For non-residents of Hawaii there is a $7.00 parking fee. (NOTE: Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources states that currently there are no legal hiking trails beginning at the Pali Lookout and violators will be cited and fined)
