Ala Moana Center in Honolulu is the largest shopping mall in Hawai'i, the ninth largest shopping mall in the United States, and the largest open-air shopping center in the world. With 2.4 million square feet of retail space, it is home to over 350 stores and more than 160 dining options. Located at 1450 Ala Moana Boulevard and adjacent to Ala Moana Beach Park, Ala Moana Center is part of the commercial, retail, and residential district located south of Makiki, east of Kaka'ako, and west of Waikiki. In 1959, Ala Moana Center became the largest shopping mall in the United States, only to be overshadowed later by new retail developments across the nation.
A June 26, 2009, report from US News and World Report ranked Ala Moana Center the second most profitable mall in America with annual sales of more than $1 billion, based on sales per square footage. The mall showed one of the highest occupancy rates (95 percent) and $1,125 in sales per square foot. Over 56 million people visit Ala Moana Center annually. To this day Ala Moana Center has been consistently listed as one of the most valuable malls in the United States. Shoppers can enjoy a full calendar of seasonal events here including Hawaiian-style holidays and a Chinese New Year celebration. Ala Moana Center provides a 4th of July Celebration featuring one of the top fireworks displays in the nation.
