Hawai'i State Art Museum at night
The Hawai'i State Art Museum (HiSAM) is located on the second floor of the No. 1 Capitol District Building located at 250 South Hotel Street, Honolulu, Hawai'i. It currently houses over 7,000 pieces of artwork in its collection.
Before the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (the “Pink Palace”) opened its doors in 1927, it began greeting guests here in downtown Honolulu from the year 1872 until its relocation to Waikīkī. From 1928 until 1987 this property was home to the Armed Services YMCA for nearly six decades. In 1987 the building was purchased by businessman and real estate developer Chris Hemmeter to serve as his corporate headquarters. When he decided to relocate outside of Hawai'i, the building was purchased by a Japanese corporation.
The State of Hawai'i leased office space here and eventually purchased the property for $22.5 million in the year 2000. After renovation, it formally opened on November 3, 2002, and is a showcase for the state’s collection of art.
The museum gift shop, café, and Sculpture Garden are located on the ground floor and museum galleries are on the second floor.
HiSam falls under the state’s Art in Public Places Program, which was established in 1967, designating that by law, 1% of the construction cost of new public buildings will go to the acquisition of works of art. Hawai'i was the first state in the US to have such a program.
HiSAM is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm. The museum is closed Sundays and state and federal holidays. Admission is free for everyone.
