---Hukilau Beach---
Hukilau Beach sign
Hukilau beach is a fun beach with good swimming and lots to explore. If you feel adventurous you can walk north to Malaekahana beach and wade through the channel to Goat Island when the tide is low. If you walk to the south, you will find Bathtub beach, a reef protected stretch of shoreline that forms pools of water on the beach. The Park behind the beach is a popular picnic spot on weekends.
The plaque at the Hukilau beach sign says:
Welcome to Historic Hukilau Beach
Huki – “to pull”
Lau “fish net with ti leaf”
From 1948 to 1971, this site was a popular attraction. Tourists could participate in the hukilau, eat at a luau, buy handmade arts and crafts, and watch the dances of Polynesia. These events led to the creation of the world famous "hukilau" song by Jack Owens.
The hukilau was conceived as a fundraising venture by local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), to help build a chapel in this community. This chapel still stands today as a tribute to the past and present residents of Laie.
