ALOHA from O'ahu
---Ka'ena Point---

Ka'ena Point is the westernmost tip of land on the island of O'ahu. The point can be reached only by foot from either the Wai'anae or the Mokule'ia coast. An approach from the northern Mokule'ia side is recommended since parts of the path on the Wai'anae trail are completely washed out and have rope assists to help hikers travel across the gap. Originally the hike was about 2.5 miles to reach the point from either path but recent road closures for vehicles could make a hike longer. It is impossible for vehicles to drive between the northern and western O'ahu coastlines that meets at Ka'ena Point.
In Hawaiian, ka'ena means "the heat". Indeed, it can get quite hot here since there is little shade to be found in the area. In Hawaiian legends, Ka'ena Point is known as “leina ka 'uhane or the “leaping place of souls”. After death, a newly released soul can meet the spirits of ancestors and friends here to be escorted off the earthly plane. Other legends here are of night marchers, the spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors that appear as ghosts carrying torches and playing drums while chanting and seeking their next battle.
The State of Hawai'i has designated the point as a Natural Area Reserve to protect nesting Laysan Albatrosses, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, Hawaiian Monk Seals as well as the fragile native vegetation. Visitors are asked to respect the flora and fauna of Ka'ena Point.
