Geocache Description:

** 1/24 Update: The area in which this cache is placed used to be called Blue Ridge Center but as of May 26, 2023, it is now Sweet Run State Park! As such, the links and text below have been updated accordingly. **

Stretching over a 893-acre landscape, Sweet Run State Park’s land is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Hike the trails and you're very likely to see a rich diversity of organisms ranging from small to large. Butterflies, turtles, frogs, salamanders and fish make their home here, as well as many mammals also.

The variety of landscapes — open fields, riparian areas, deciduous forests, wetlands, ponds and rock outcrops — provide an environment rich in bird life as well. Herons, mourning doves, field sparrows and wood ducks are just a few of the roughly 130 species that have been identified here.

Fifteen distinct habitats have been surveyed, ranging from mature chestnut oak forest to young recovering riparian forests. The primary forest community is a mixed mesophytic forest, with tulip poplar, a variety of oaks and maples and hickory types numbering the dominant tree species.

Surveys and research into the of the area's ecology is regularly done and the Blue Ridge Center used to maintain a database of the numerous flora and fauna species that have been identified.

This is a cache placed towards the middle of the Sweet Run property. Just uphill from Sweet Run and slightly downhill from what was once BREC’s primitive camping area, you'll find a clear lock-n-lock tucked away just off the path. It's intended to be a cache where visitors can leave behind their impressions of this lovely area — both in writing and/or photographs. Although not required in order to log a find, you are encouraged to upload any nature photos taken while at Sweet Run State Park when you log this cache. As time goes on, hopefully this cache page will become a great place to look to see a bit of the variety of life Sweet Run has!

*Note: If approaching from the actual stream named Sweet Run be prepared for a shallow stream wade on your way towards this one.

This cache is placed within Sweet Run State Park land, which is managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Please take the time to enjoy finding these caches but also respecting the land which they allow us to explore.
