The "BIG GUY" aka BIG JOHN is a statue that stands 20 feet height. He is on main street in Helper, Utah located at the Civic Auditorium. The"BIG GUY" was placed there in the mid-1960's, he represents the unifying of a community and the memories of all those who have given their lives in the local coal mines, since the late 1890's.

Loved by locals and visitors alike, Big John has been standing proud here in Helper since the 1960s. He acts as a reminder of the area’s mining roots and an unofficial memorial to the many lives lost since mining came to the area in the 1880s. Big John is just one of the ways you will see the rich history of our area come to life here in the Corridor, and measuring at 18-feet tall, he is definitely the biggest historical mascot you will find here.

If this statue looks a little familiar to you, there could be a reason why. International Fiberglass made this statue by using an existing mold they had for Paul Bunyan, replacing his traditional ax with the pickaxe and ensuring Big John is ready for the mines with his traditional miner’s helmet on his head.
