Geocache Description:

Not much to say really - if you think Geocachers are mad then take a look at the people getting wet at the Cardiff International White Water (CIWW) course situated at the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay. The water they are playing in comes from the River Ely, which has had a long history of moderate to severe pollution from which it is now thankfully recovering.

The cache is a simple one-stage multi large enough to hold geocoins and small TBs situated not far from the site of one of the former Ely Coal Staithes. The coordinates will take you to a small information board where you will need to obtain some numbers for use in finding the final cache location.

The Ely Coal Staithes were the last of ten that were built in Cardiff and they were originally opened in which year (Ref: ABCD)? These coal hoists on the River Ely were used until 1966 for shipping coal to Portishead power station near Bristol. They handled over 200,000 tons each year and they were capable of loading how many tons of coal per hour (Ref: EFG)? Extending into the River Ely the staithes allowed coal wagons from the Taff Vale Railway to discharge coal directly into waiting boats that were anchored on it.

The final cache coordinates are at N51 26.(A+B)GF, W003 10.(D-A)(B-C)(C-E)

Note: The information board is not accessible 24/7.
