Geocache Description:


This cache is created to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the national hero of the Philippines, Dr. José P. Rizal.

You will find yourself standing in a historically significant area because this was where José Rizal and his family lived from 1891 to 1892. His family was persecuted by the friars back in the Philippines due to Rizal’s subversive novels and so they joined Rizal on his self-exile in this former British colony. Rizal would also hold clinic where he practiced medicine (opthalmology) at what is now 1 D’Aguilar Avenue. See also a photo of his HK business card.

Outside Rednaxela Terrace, a commemorative marker had been set up by The Antiquities Authority of Hong Kong which reads: "Dr. Jose P. Rizal (1861-1896) National hero of the Philippines Lived in this area with his family from December 1891 to June 1892." (Rednaxela is Alexander spelled backwards attributed to a Chinese street sign painter who couldn't read English)

It is noteworthy that when Rizal was living in Hong Kong, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, instrumental in the eventual overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and acknowledged as the father of modern China, was studying medicine at the nearby Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese (the forerunner of The University of Hong Kong).

Rizal and Sun Yat-sen might have crossed paths in Hong Kong!
