A Dictionary provides a Definition for “Common” which reads “Chiefly New England. A tract of land owned or used jointly by the residents of a community, usually a central square or park in a city or town.”
Convenient street parking all around the park.
In colonial America, the park was more commonly called the common. These areas were found especially in the New England colonies. The common was short for “common area,” a large area in the center of a village or town where people would gather before and after meetings. The common often contained or was adjacent to the meetinghouse. New Englanders also let their livestock graze on the common. Colonial common areas provided an opportunity for people to gather in a safe place. Many New England cities and towns still maintain a common. Some are established fixtures in a community and some are more recent additions. All still serve their original function of providing a safe meeting place.
Take the time to walk around and see the monuments and dedications to Waltham’s heroes and notable leaders.
