This series of caches memorialize those unfortunate individuals
that were murdered on the slopes of beautiful Mt. Tamalpais. May
this type of desecration never happen again.
Between August 19, 1979 and May 2, 1981, nine people were murdered
and one wounded on Bay Area trails. Three murders were committed on
the trails of Mt. Tamalpais, two on Rock Spring Trail, and one on
Matt Davis Trail.
On August 19, 1979, Edda Kane, a forty-four year old resident of
Mill Valley went hiking on Mt. Tamalpais. She parked at the
Mountain Home Inn, on Throckmorton Ridge, at the base of the
mountain. She was going to hike to the top of the mountain and
back. Edda was assaulted on Rock Spring Trail, about ½ mile
northeast of Mountain Theatre. She was shot in the back with a .44
handgun. Edda was the first person to be murdered on Mt. Tamalpais
in recorded history. May Edda’s family remember her in
peace.
David Carpenter, the person responsible for these murders, is in
prison at San Quentin and will never see the outside world again.
May a tragedy such as this never again occur on the sacred slopes
of Mt. Tamalpais.
The cache is a small lock ‘n lock container placed within 100
feet of where Edda’s body was found. There’s room for
travel bugs, geocoins, and small trade items. There’s a
George Washington dollar coin for the first-to-find
