Geocache Description:

Historic Hamilton: Ancaster Township Hall

Historic Hamilton will be a series of caches that serve to bring cachers to historic places in and around the City of Hamilton. These caches can be placed by anyone, and are not limited to one CO. If you know of a historic place that you would like to bring people to, feel free to add it to the series!

Cache is a micro container that contains a log. Please bring your own writing instrument to sign. I have also created a parking waypoint for your convenience. Cache is located inside the gazebo.

The Ancaster Township Hall was built in 1871, and restored in 1966 as a Centennial Project by the citizens of Ancaster. It is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Originally, it was built at a cost of $2,700. It is distinguished by a neo-classical portico and italianate cupola. It is now a community centre, and remains a landmark on the main street and a symbol for the town.

The general area of this cache has a lot of things to check out. Their are so many plaques and interesting things to see. The Township of Ancaster Original Fire Bell is on display. Also, check out the Ancaster Memorial. It was originally constructed in October 1925 in memory of those who died in "The Great War, 1914-1918" (19 names) and "World War II, 1939-1945" (19 names). "Their Names Liveth for Evermore." The two stone cairns, one on each side of the entrance to the Ancaster Township Hall, unveiled October 17, 1925, originally had identical plaques. After WWII, one plaque was replaced with a matching one for those killed in that war. Their is also metal arch displaying the words "Ancaster Memorial."

Congratulations to Foam Follower on the FTF!
