Geocache Description:

The Roxburgh Branch (Railway) Series.

""Wayside Stations"

Heading up to Forsyth from Waitahuna or from Lawrence was a slow grind. Second highest point on the line and all those five chain curves.

This station near Clarks Flat was named after the wife of Adam Johnston, Miss Forsyth.

A gradient diagram of the branch line shows a series of waves with peaks:
at Forsyth, 626 feet (190.8m) above sea level,
Round Hill, at 668 feet (203.6m) and
Big Hill, at 555 feet (169.16m).
To build this section, and some others, it was necessary to change the grade also the curve criteria.
The grade maximum was increased from 1 in 46 to 1 in 40.
The curves were tightened from 10 chains to 5 chains radius. 10 chains = 201.168 meters 5 chains = 100.584 meters.

During March 1986 a siding was provided at Forsyth for the local settlers. Also here was a passenger platform and a station shelter.

Nearby you will see one of the many smaller bridges that were built on this line. This is one of the earlier ones, stone construction not concrete.

This is a short stretch of road so please be careful where you park and when crossing.
Not a suitable place for children.
