Kings Pool

Don't Need To Know But Might Be Of Interest

Where does the name Ewelme come from? There are a couple of theories about this.

1. From the Latin Aqua Alma “Sweet Water”

2. From Anglo-Saxon Aewhylme “Waters Whelming” as in water whelming up from the ground.

Which ever it is there is no doubt the source of Ewelmes name comes from its’ bountiful spring which fills Kings Pool and provides the water flowing down into the watercress beds.

Personally I favour the Anglo-Saxon, I’ll let you debate and decide your favourite.

Chaucer wrote of the spring
“In worlde is none more clere of hue,
Its water ever freshe and newe,
That whelmeth up in waves bright,
The mountenance of three fingers height.”

In Medieval times the waters of Ewelme were famous to cure “divers ills”

Another stream can also be found in Gloucestershire named the River Ewelme.
