Bejeweled - Diamond Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

kvenator: Retiring as part of a series. I like the puzzle and the container is still in good shape so plan to redeploy it as a standalone puzzle in a different location.

In the meantime, the nearby vicinity is being repurposed for a new concept.

Geocache Description:

This is one of my new favorite places in the area so I hope you enjoy the cache and the hike. A few quick items I wanted to call out real quick: 1) from the parking area to the cache is about 0.84 miles one way or about 1.7 miles r.t. 2) there's a low water crossing where you might get your feet wet. You might want to bring waterproof shoes or an extra pair for when you get back to the car. 3) sorry, but no pets/dogs or bikes allowed. It's strictly hiking only. 4) there's poison ivy around the cache. 5) Prairie Center hours are dawn to dusk 6) Lastly, the hike is mostly on maintained or mowed Prairie Center trails. The last 50' takes you just inside the tree line for the cache. HAVE FUN!

Regional diamond and precious gem wholesaler K.C. Da Beers reported this week that a theft has occurred at it’s Olathe, KS secure storage facility.   Authorities believe that a single thief defeated multiple layers of security to access the vault where the valuables were located and made off with several large, high quality gemstones worth an estimated $5.5M.

Authorities need your help to find the stolen diamonds and have indicated that there are 2 ways to find them.  The Thief’s cache will contain coordinates to the Bejeweled - Diamond cache (the thief's stash finale).
1)    you can solve the logic puzzle below to identify the thief and go directly to the thief’s cache.
2)    OR, if you don’t care for puzzles, you can put each suspect under surveillance (go to each of the 5 individual suspect’s caches) and catch the thief that way.  You might get lucky and catch the thief right off the bat.
3)    OR both

Following is a list of all six Bejeweled caches (5 suspect caches + a finale). Each suspect cache contains a card indicating if the designated person is innocent or guilty:
Bejeweled - Amethyst - GC2WAHZ - Mr Frank Drebin
Bejeweled - Diamond - GC2WADQ (Finale)
Bejeweled - Emerald - GC2WAGN - Ms Velma Dinkley
Bejeweled - Pearl - GC2WAGY - Ms Jane Marple
Bejeweled - Ruby - GC2WAHC - Mr Maxwell Smart
Bejeweled - Sapphire - GC2WAFC - Mr Jacques Clouseau

The suspects are, surprisingly enough, all former professional or amateur sleuths, investigators, special agents and/or detectives.  One of them must also include stealing among their list of avocations.

The suspects are:
Ms Velma Dinkley
Ms Jane Marple
Mr Jacques Clouseau
Mr Frank Drebin
Mr Maxwell Smart

Each suspect has one of the following specialty skills which adds to the litany of reasons they are presumed to be capable of pulling off such a fantastical heist.

Specialty skills are:
Disabling surveillance and alarm systems
Hacking computer & communications systems
Diversionary tactics
Forgery and otherwise defeating identification mechanisms
Safe cracking

The items below were found near the crime scene.  Each item belongs to a different suspect and therefore places them at or near the scene of the crime.

Evidence gathered at the scene:
Lipstick
Eye Glasses
Keys
Phone
Matchbook

The suspects were all brought in for questioning and each suspect has an alibi or reasons for being in the area of the crime.

The alibis are:
Geocaching
Walking  their dog
Bike Ride
Hiking
Fishing

Each was connected to a Lie Detector and asked “did you take the diamonds?”

Each responded sarcastically with a “Yeah, sure” or “go jump in a lake” and was immediately rebuked by the authorities and coerced into responding with a simple “Yes” or “No”

The lie detector reading was then interpreted to yield one of two results; they’re either lying or telling the truth.

There’s only one thief.  The thief either answered “Yes” and was telling the truth or they answered “No” and they were lying…. In either case, you got ‘em.

Find the guilty suspect and locate their cache to obtain the coordinates to the finale.

Clues:
  • The lipstick belongs to one of the women (duh).
  • Only one of the three men is telling the truth
  • Only one of the two women answers "yes" and she doesn't have a dog
  • The safe cracker's lie detector result was not the same as the other woman's
  • The geocacher is telling the truth and did not lose their keys
  • The suspect whose alibi was fishing possessed a license which was a fraudulent imitation
  • The hacker, who was the only man who answered "yes", did not leave the matchbook and does not ride a bike
  • Mr Clouseau, while having a similar sounding name as a famous ocean explorer, doesn't fish
  • The person who misplaced their eye glasses near the scene of the crime was walking her dog (come on, you know this).
  • You called yourself from the phone found at the crime scene and got the number from caller ID.  You called the phone, it wrang, then the voicemail greeting said "Hi, this is Leslie, please leave a message"
  • Maxwell, who was reprimanded for jailbreaking his co-worker's iPhones, does not ride a bike or geocache
  • The person who lost their keys is a liar
  • The person who fishes answered "yes"
  • The person who specializes in diversionary tactics did not leave keys or a matchbook
  • The person who disables alarms systems was telling the truth
