Look high and low but don't forget to enjoy the scenery. Beware for muggles for they can be plentiful at times. This cache is best done on weekends when the garden is sure to be clear. If caching at night be sure to bring some lights. If you are wheelchair bound, you'll still be able to find the cache, with a good eye, but will need help actually retrieving it.
The UNLV Arboretum was established in May of 1985. Legislation enabled the University of Nevada Board of Regents to establish arboreta at both of the four year institutions within the state, including our sister arboretum at the University of Nevada, Reno.
The UNLV Arboretum includes the entire 335 acre campus. Of this acreage, 80 acres are landscaped with trees, shrubs, and turf, including a two acre Xeric Garden. The grounds are often referred to as the "Emerald in the Desert," a maxim that has been attached to the recently created Arboretum logo.
The Xeric Garden is a prime example of how drought-tolerant plants and a water efficient irrigation system may be allied to conserve water, yet create an attractive landscape. The term xeric comes from the Greek xeros, which means dry. The word xeriscape is often used to describe a garden of such plants. It is amongst the plants of this garden where the cache hides.
The garden is located at the entrance to the Barrick Museum of Natural History and the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies. Be careful of thorns and do not disturb the plants. The cache is a small container and includes a log a pencil, and a few things to trade. There is a special $1 in there for the FTF. Enjoy!
