Ellesmere is a pretty town in
Shropshire, little-known and often mistaken for the more famous
Ellesmere Port in South Wirral, which is not only a far less
picturesque town but ironically was also named after Ellesmere due
to a particular canal route which began in Ellesmere and ended in
Ellesmere Port at the end of what is now called the Shropshire
Union Canal. The Plantation in Ellesmere, the site of this cache,
is a beautiful woodland featuring many paths, popular with walkers
and dog walkers. It was once a series of allotments, before being
abandoned and left an eyesore, but was taken on by the Shropshire
Wildlife Trust in 1984 and has since been transformed into the
stunning managed woodland that it is today.
While The Plantation is suitable for all the family, it does
have some steep slopes and can become quite muddy after rain, so
please be careful and wear appropriate footwear and clothing. The
cache is a click-lock box containing a logbook and various swag;
these include 1st, 2nd and 3rd To Find badges, so please take the
appropriate badge if you are one of the first three to find the
cache. Also, if taking any item please replace with something of
similar value or appeal, I’ve found some caches in this area
recently with any old tut left in them!! There are parking and
facilities at The Mere, including a cafe, toilets etc, which is
within easy walking, plus there is a footpath down onto the
Llangollen Canal for boaty cachers. There is also limited parking
opposite the entrance to the marina on Birch Road, and also in the
car park above the tunnel a little way along the canal ... and
handy for another of my caches! :).
Please post a photo with your log if you can.
Good luck!!
