The bushfires of Christmas Day, 2001 swept through the New South Wales towns of Warragamba and Silverdale, leaving 30 homes and businesses destroyed.
The bushfires were the longest official continuous bushfire emergency in NSW. Taking place between December 21, 2001 and January 13, 2002 and spreading across the state.
Many local residents of the townships under threat battled the fires with garden hoses and buckets. Hundreds of people were forced into an emergency evacuation from Warragamba.
There were 5 houses lost in the area surrounding GZ alone. After 10 years the town has battled to recover from these fires and the closure of Warragamba dam to tourist.
