The Secret Cove - Enjoy spectacular sea views en-route to find this cache: Starting at Goodrington, follow the South West coast path uphill beside the historic stream railway. Begin to ascend Sugarloaf Hill, pausing to take a well deserved rest and admire the view before uncovering your treasure. CAUTION - Look for this geocache at low tide.
Sugarloaf Hill offers spectacular views across Torbay and it is thought that its height may be due to its possible volcanic origins. From this position, down below you can see Saltern Cove which was designated as the first local marine nature reserve in the UK in 1973 due to its fascinating geology and incredible diversity of marine life. Later, in 1985 it also became a SSSI for the same reasons.
Amelia Griffiths lived in Torquay between 1768-1858 and was an avid beachcomber. She collected and preserved nearly 250 different species of seaweed from the Saltern Cove area during her lifetime and her collections are currently housed in Torquay Museum. Her studies raised awareness of the diversity of marine plant life and made her one of the first women to be recognised for her contribution to science.
The sheltered and secluded location of Saltern Cove make it an ideal habitat for a huge number of different marine species including Squat lobsters, Tompot blennies, Common starfish and Velvet swimming crabs. Once you’ve found this cache, why not descend to Saltern Cove and spend some time investigating the rockpools to see how many different species you can find?
This is one of many official English Riviera Geopark caches hidden at key sites around the English Riviera – a UNESCO Global Geopark. Each cache is located somewhere of significant interest and aims to teach something about this wonderful Geopark.
Geoparks aims to protect geo-diversity and to promote geological heritage to the general public as well as to support sustainable economic development of the area, primarily through the development of geological tourism.
This particular cache was hidden in May 2011 as part of the annual English Riviera Geopark Festival.
