In between the vast stretches of tropical rainforest there are a
few patches of rock spread out over French Guiana, these are called
inselbergs, which is German for Island-mountains. These inselbergs
are parts where the Guiana shield sticks out through the
soil.
The Guiana shield is a 1.7 billion year old remnant of the South
American plate; it has survived the merging and rifting of the
tectonic plates. The Guiana shield Stretches from Colombia over
Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil.
Wherever the soil on top of the Guiana shield has eroded, the
granite of the shield appears as an Inselberg. These inselbergs
have allowed a very specific vegetation to develop, because they
are isolated from each other, have small surfaces, have a lack of
nutrients and experience great extremes in temperature and
humidity. Many litophytes (plants growing on rocks), orchids and
succulents grow there, adapted to the lack of nutrients and
extremes in temperature and humidity, on these bare rocks. This
type of vegetation is called savane-roche
(“rock-savanna”), many of the species in this
vegetation type are only found in a few places, due to the scarcity
and small surface of savane-roche areas.
An easily accessible example of such an inselberg is savane-roche
Virginie, which is located a few kilometers east of Régina. You can
park along the RN2 between Régina and St.Georges near the
trailhead. The walk is very nice and around 4km long (one way), it
took us around 2 hours to walk there, with lots of breaks and photo
shooting and 1 hour to walk back down hill, with fewer breaks. The
walk isn’t very difficult, but one has to go over a few trees
and cross some streams, so good (waterproof) shoes are recommended.
A bottle of water is really needed for this trip!

- Go to N04° 11.796 W052° 09.122, here you will see in intrusion
of quartz in the granite (see photo), try to explain why the quartz
sticks out from the granite? Also send me this answer in your

En Guyane, il y a entre la forêt tropicale quelques plaques de
roche étalé, ce qu'on appelle des inselbergs, le terme allemand
pour des « îles-montagnes ». Ces inselbergs sont des pièces où le
bouclier guyanais dépasse le sol.
Le bouclier guyanais est une reste, qui a 1,7 milliards années, de
la plaque sud-américaine, il a survécu à la fusion et la distension
de la tectonique des plaques. Le bouclier guyanais s'étend de la
Colombie au Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Guyane et le Brésil.
Partout où le sol au-dessus du bouclier guyanais a érodé, le granit
du bouclier guyanais apparaît comme un Inselberg. Ces inselbergs
ont permis de développer une végétation très spécifique, parce
qu'elles sont isolées, ont de petites surfaces, l’absence
d'éléments nutritifs et des extrêmes de température et d'humidité.
Beaucoup de litophites (plantes qui poussent sur les rochers), des
orchidées et des plantes succulentes y poussent, adaptée à
l'absence d'éléments nutritifs et des températures et humidités
extrêmes, sur ces rochers nus. Ce type de végétation est appelé
savane-roche, de nombreuses espèces dans ce type de végétation ne
se trouvent que dans quelques endroits, en raison de la rareté et
lesde petites surfaces du savane-roche.
Savane-Roche Virginie est un inselberg facilement accessible, qui
est situé à quelques kilomètres à l'est de Régina. Vous-pouvez vous
garer le long de la RN2 entre Regina et Saint Georges, près du
début du sentier. La promenade est très agréable et environ 4km de
long (aller simple), nous avons eu besoin de 2 heures pour y aller
à pied, avec beaucoup de pauses et des photos et 1 heure pour
redescendre la colline, avec moins de pauses. La marche n'est pas
très difficile, mais il faut traverser quelques arbres et quelques
cours d'eau, donc des chaussures imperméables sont recommandées.
Une bouteille d'eau est vraiment nécessaire pour ce promenade
!
